How many PCIe lanes are supported for each M.2 interface in the new Alienware 17 R4?
From what I've understood the new Alienware 17 R4 has 3 M.2 SSD slots (2 x 2280 and 1 x 2242) link with the information.
Do we know what is supported by each M.2 slot?
Previous Alienware laptops versions had the following:
The alienware 15 R2, as well as the alienware 17 R3 which both have the same motherboards, have two m.2 slots. One of the two slots supports both Pcie X4 and SATA III as the m.2 interface can support either sata or Pcie. The second m.2 slot supports ONLY sata III and/or Pcie x2.
To repeat, one of the slots supports 4 lanes of Pcie, the other supports only 2 lanes of Pcie. Both slots support Sata III.
For people that would like more information on the importance of amounts and type of lanes in a M.2 interface, please review the Performance Range in this article

I can't answer your question, but thanks for partly answering mine :-)

Any idea how the other PCIE lanes are distributed?

As additional information, I've asked the same question to @AlienwareTech (Alienware Support Twitter Verified account)
As for now they've replied with the following:
Hard drive:
- One 2.5-inch drive
Solid-state drive (SSD):
- Two full-size M.2 PCIe/SATA drives
- One half-size M.2 PCIe/SATA drive
Interface:
- SATA 6 Gbps
- PCIe up to 32 Gbps
I've asked for a confirmation of the 32Gbps for each M.2

I had the original 256GB Toshiba drive and a Samsung 950 Pro 512GB working in my system. I did not run any benchmarks on the drives so not sure about how many lanes they use and performance levels.
Something happened the other day when I was doing some drive cleanup and although the drives show up in BIOS setup they are intermittently visible in DiskPart and Windows Recovery stuff. I've tried switching back to just the original drive only to no avail. I"m getting ready to file a warranty claim as I now have a bricked system.
