Please note on the M17XR4 (at least) and probably others you also need go to system tray right click speaker icon -> select recording devices -> HDMI in go to the listen tab and select Listen to this device. Hope this helps someone else out cause it took me ages to figure out.

So I followed the instructions posted here and got the sound to work from my PS3 to my M17xR4. When the PS3 turns on and is in staging mode the sound is fine, but when I get into a game all it plays to my M17x is a very loud clicking noise - sounds kind of like a rattle snake on crack. Any thoughts anyone? Tried a few different games, with the same result.

Have you tried a different HDMI cable , I had some crackling on a cheap one. I replaced it and it cleared straight up.
