Aurora R4 Loud Fan & Ambient Sensors Problems

The Aurora R4 that I brought back in May recently started making loud fan noise while playing games.  I tried updating Alienware Command Center to get a better picture, but the Ambient Sensor 1 shows a temperature of either 20 C or 0 C, while Ambient 2 and 3 shows a constant temperature of 0 and 65 C, respectively.  The System Fan keeps a constant 396 RPM, which I do not think is accurate as prior to the update it jumps to 4000 RPM when the machine is making the loud fan noises.

While I have not notice any other issue at the moment, I do worry that this possible overheating, and lack of an accurate temperature information could eventually damage my computer.  I tried lowering the graphic setting of the games I play and clearing the dust buildup in the machine, but the issue remain.  If anyone has information regarding this issue and how to solve it (other than call tech support), it will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

See my post here:

Paying special attention to "Power Dissipation" fix and testing MIO-Board (outside of Windows) with Dell Diagnostics (PSA - ePSA).

Verify that MIO-Board is still working outside of Windows.

You can run CPUID HW-Monitor to watch temps. and other things:

Are your fans and lights working ok other than when you run Flight-Simulator-X ?

What about other games or Heaven Benchmark?

What make and model video card(s) do you have?

After calling tech support over the weekend, I think getting a tech out to replace the fan/cooling system/motherboard might be the best way to solving this.  As my system has deteriorate to a point where the temperature hit 100 C after being on for about 20 minutes, regarding of being idle or doing web surfing.  Just be sure to update your BIOS so you don't end up having the tech doing the update for you.

I have the same issue.  I bought my Aurora R4 about two months ago.. about two days ago the system fan started going insane every time I run a game.  I ran some diagostics and a CPU monitor and the CPU is overheating to well over 100 degrees celcius during prep testing in the F12 bios menu and runs at almost max temp (about 183 degress Fahrenheit) when running most games.  I sure hope they have a good warranty program.  It figures I am getting surgery tomorrow so I won't be able to call for at least a week.  I'm not happy about this.. at all.  And I haven't done anything with the overclocking...  I7-3960x @ 3.30 Ghz.

Please start your own thread.

Hard to say what is "normal" for Aurora-R4 with i7-3960. Hard to get a user that is serious enough to document this sorta thing (while system is working properly). But Intel i7 anywhere near TJMax or 100c is too hot I think.

See my findings and how I trouble-shoot it here:

Call Dell. Sounds like your Asetek CPU cooler might be lose or bad.

CPU 3    65°C

I need a refund ! Seriously, i recieve my computer today. Its a shame !

1. Call Phone Support. They will be happy to help you.

2. Start your own thread.

3. Power Dissipation Fix:

The CPU cooler, sensors, lights, and extra case fans are controlled by the MIO-Board, so trouble-shooting should start there.

Shut-down machine properly so it will turn off. Unplug from wall or UPS. Hold down power button for 20 seconds to dissipate any electricity in machine and MIO-Board. Press it a few extra times. Wait another 20 secs before powering up. See if that very simple procedure resets MIO-Board.

The issue was resolved. The problem was the liquid pump had failed and the processor was running more and more hot over time causing the fans to run in overdrive. I called support and they sent someone out the next evening to get it fixed. I recommend folks with this issue call support and let the experts figure out what's up. Took 10 whole minutes for them to connect remotely and run a diagnostic test. Or you can listen to the self titled "experts" in this forum and end up with a melted motherboard. Your choice.

Well, I have had all sorts of fan problems with my R4 and just about every problem with the pc has been resolved by turning it off (prob in situation where it wont start or boot for this trick) make sure is plugged in wall with power off. hold down power button for 20 secs. turn power back on and try to boot up. This has resolved a range of problems with my r4 up until....... windows 10.

3 weeks after install its started going 100% on at least 2 of the fans, the pci and hard drive one, a quick and half fix for this is to switch from auto to manual on the thermal controller (even if you are already on manual) and this should make it pump a bit on start up which is a slight improvement and then when windows has loaded up the thermal controller the fans go back to normal.

I am no pc expert or tech guy but this is my theory. I am sure this is a power supply or power related issue or at least the r4 has issues here. For some reason now the thermal controller is obviously not working until it boots in windows (surely cxan be a fix for this) come ON DELL. I know fpor a fact draing the power would have sorted mu old xps but was ouit of warrenty and they diidnt try that and billed me for new processor and motherboard however for some reason i have stayed with dell and now dell?alienware.

however, for me to buy another they need to resolve some issues and keep up tech support for old users, the other day win 10 said on start up "alien respawn has been deleted as no longer works" well what happens if this happen with the thermal controller, a big worry.....

HOWEVER THERE IS HOPE..... YAY YAY YAY.

I just updated from a oem nevidia 1.5gb 660gtx to an evga 2gb 960 gtx with no problems and huge performance increases. Weird thing is is that it has halfed the boot up time (seriously) so the fan issue has half been resolved from this alone. Had to use both 6 pin connectors with an adapter to an 8 pin to install the card, so this is why i think that the power supply or something related to this has been cuasing a lot of the issues which people have been experiencing. However when windows 10 does updates it can take ages like 20 mins plus with full fanage (not enjoyable and surely going to half the life of the pci and hard drive fans. Off topic, cann i fit another 8 pim power supply for another gpu so i can sli mine or fit another 2 6 pin and use an adapter to an 8 pin and also how do you finf out what the powers suply is rated at and how much power is left available for additional cards, my 960 gtx ssc needed 400 watt minimum so obviuosly is above this, please advise and good luck everyone going forward with your r4;s and other crazy ET Devices,

QUESTIONS FOR DELL:

Could a manual fan controller be a viable solution to having full control of the fans from startup etc etc. if so could dell/alienware please provide or reccomend / guide old users on how to install one and which one to get etc  as i have not heard this bought up and i think could be a solution. Also this could be a neat little product for alienware to sell, i would pay maube a 100 quuid for a cool alien looking device that sits on my desk and allows me to see temp, fan speeds and give me presets and manual control over the currents fans and the ability to add and customise th r4 rig with new fans.

also i am running my original bios that came with the machine, would like to updaet the bios but i am worried about doing so as it runs fine now and i dont want to make anything worse especially after reading about peoples issues on this forum.

Finally dell I ma a huge aliebware fan and have bought your computers for almost a decade, please can you respect this customer loyalty (I am not saying that you dont but I have always defende  alienware as I have had such a great deal and experience up until recnectly, (if it is win 10 related issues then some advice or warnings would have been appreciated as from my exeriences i wpould have waited and styed on 8.1. Anyway love my righ just please hel[p me to keep loving it.
