240W AC adapter for M17x R2 turns off when plugged into laptop. Blue light turns off

Hey everyone!,

I just purchased a used Alienware M17x R2 Laptop last night.

I had the laptop plugged in and charging perfectly last night, however, things took a turn for the worse when I woke up.

I woke up to a completely dead laptop with the blue light on the ac adapter turned off.

1. When the AC adapter is plugged into the wall by itself, the blue light on the charger is on and ready to go.

2. However, when I plug my ac adapter into the M17X R2, the blue light shuts off completely and no charge takes place.

3. I can't power on the laptop to check anything as I get no power and a dead battery.

Do I order a new adapter, or is this motherboard fried -_-

:(

I have experienced this myself a few times. It is most likely something with the mother board. Depending on how and when you purchased the system, I would encourage you contact the seller to discuss replacement or refund. The computer is defective. While many things can lead to this issue, the ac adapter will most likely be responding to a power surge caused by either defect or damage to the motherboard. Things like liquid spills can cause this.

You can try unplugging it, removing the battery, and holding down the power key for 30 seconds. You can also remove the CMOS battery and then reinsert everything and try turning it on.

You can also try plugging it in without the battery connected. I would also suggest tryign to plug it in while the laptop is turned off and see if it would charge the battery then.

You can also go into BIOS and turn off battery charging, and see if you can use it plugged in at that point.

You should report any POST error beeps you may hear as well.

Ultimately you will most likely need to replace the motherboard, but you can try a new ac adapter and battery, however, I would recommend contacting the seller.

Hey Phoenix!

I appreciate the quick response!

I just noticed tonight that the battery is fulled charged from the night before it died. However, the computer won't even boot up with a fully charged battery inserted. I don't even get a little light or juice. Completely lights out on the system.

Would this be a defective motherboard causing the M17X R2 not to boot? My seller said he would refund the system or cover any repairs needed for the laptop. I just have no idea what would be causing the system not to boot with a fully charged battery.

Thank you again for your input! It helps a lot!

I am glad that I could help in any way. Personally, I am under the thought that the motherboard might be the issue.

Have you had the chance to test using just the ac adapter without the battery plugged in?

If the seller is willing to over repair costs, it would be worth it to send it in for repair to Dell. However, cost for repair might be higher than expected depending on what needs to be replaced.

The overall idea is whether or not it is important to go forward with repair or simply get a refund back.

Hello FXPAC899!

I agree with PhoenixBennuto, when you plug in the ac adapter into the system and the light turns off, there might be a Short circuit and in most of the case to fix it we need to replace the motherboard.

I have the same issue... however, I was running the computer on its last battery life and things were working fine.  It was plugged in and the light was off and only shut down due to no power.

Is this a situation where it is the power adaptor?

Hi!

Please confirm, does the light on the AC adapter flicker, fade out or completely turns off when you connect it to the system?

If the computer still powers on, you can also check if the battery icon on Windows says "Plugged in but not charging". Then, enter the BIOS and check if the AC adapter type says "Unknown".

Let me know!

Completely turns off...

Computer no longer turns on, as I'm assuming battery has no power.

Completely turns off...

It that case it's also a problem with the Motherboard. Send an email to AWSocialMedia@dell.com with your Service Tag and a detailed description of the issue.

Hi There, This maybe too little late, but, My daughter in-law has one of these and I had to reflow the video card twice ,it is running fine now. She didn't have this problem You are describing. I just had one of these come into my shop with the symptoms described here, I thought after reading this post, Hey, maybe its the video card!! upon removing the vid card power supply did not short out, also upon pressing the power button, lights came on and got a beep code because video card was missing. So you may want to try removing the card, and if it resolves the problem described here, find some one that is able to reflow the card. Hope this helps!!!

Mine too.  A few searches on Google shows that this seems to be a common fault.  Definitely not what I expect from a 2 year old computer, especially not an expensive, supposedly, quality one.

Will see what Dell say but as it stands they have lost me as a customer.

The light on my AC adapter flickers when I connect it to the laptop.  Any advice?

Thank you.
