Aurora R10, fans running constantly, super loud
Hello!
I just got an R10. All i have done with it so far is download programs + games and load web pages. I have not done any gaming or any real work on it, because I am waiting for a monitor to get here while using a 10 year old one!
Whenever I do *anything* on the computer, the fans ramp up to full speed and are super, super loud. I have an MSI Laptop and figured a gaming desktop would be loud also, but this is excessive considering all I've done is download steam and load a few tabs in my browser. They will stop for a moment if I stop doing anything, but if I do so much as change tabs they fire up and go wild.
I am trying to figure out how to make them not run so much and so loud. I changed the thermal setting to "quiet" in the Control Center but I am very much a layperson when it comes to computers. I'm happy to share any settings or information I need to. If it's something that can't be fixed I will send it back because I plan on using this as a gaming computer but also for work and I can't work if it's that loud all the time!
I tried looking up answers but I didn't understand any of them. Explain it to me like I'm five, hahaha. Thank you so much.

Sure, you can absolutely do it. The biggest thing to remember is not to force or over-tighten anything, it doesn't have to be crazy-tight. The best part is after you clean the top of the processor with an alcohol wipe, the Corsair comes with cpu paste pre-installed. Just don't take off the protective plastic cap until you are ready to mount it on the CPU.
This is a great video that shows how to install one on an older Alienware but I think the case is very similar. It's the video I used since I had never done a liquid cooler before but I do have years of PC repair and upgrade experience.

If you get stuck, feel free to reach out to me directly and I'd be happy to assist.

Thank you. I haven't even looked at what the temperature is -- but I haven't done anything that I thought would make it get crazy. No gaming yet and it's already doing this... I will check out the liquid coolers.
Edit: Yes, it was an option when I purchased but I didn't know any better! Oops.

I can tell you with 99% certainty what the problem is. I have the same system but with the 2080 Super in it. The 3900 does NOT come with the liquid cooler shown in the pictures when you are choosing the specs to purchase it. The 3900 comes with this plain old low-profile air cooler.
The first time I fired up my machine and loaded up a game the fans went nuts and stayed running very loudly until I stopped working and closed the game. I then looked inside the case and that's when I found out the system was air-cooled. Unfortunately, Dell doesn't spell this out for you when you are purchasing but you only get the liquid CPU cooler when you buy the more expensive processors.
I checked the CPU temp when running a game and it immediately shot up to 97c!! The max temp AMD says is ok is 95c. So, what I did was call Dell and explain the situation and told them the web page led me to believe the system would come with liquid cooling and they gave me a credit for a few bucks. I then went to the website named after a major South American river and ordered a Corsair H60 All-In-One liquid cooler. It was super easy to install and dropped the temps to normal levels. It never gets over 70c now under full load.
Edit: I just looked again at the Alienware website and they do spell it out now and allow you to choose the air-cooled or liquid-cooled option. Either enough people complained or they heard the volume of my voice when I complained about it over the phone a couple of months ago, lol.

Thanks! If I change to the liquid cooled CPU and the other fans, will the third issue probably be relatively minor?

@kbasilp Glad I could help. Also, not to usurp @Anonymous's possible response but I'll add my 2 cents to their suggestions.
Upgrading to quieter fans is a great idea so long as they still provide adequate airflow. (I didn't but may eventually)
As far as the 2tb drive causing heat, I stuffed two 8tb 3.5" drives into the case (one in the caddy, the other lying on the bottom of the case) and have a 4tb Samsung SSD in the smaller caddy and have no temp issues or fan craziness since putting the corsair liquid cooler in. Using Ryzen Master to do a slight undervolt, I get idle temps in the mid-30c range.
(P.S. The Corsair liquid cooler comes with a super quiet fan for the radiator and I took out the entire Dell top fan (loud) and bracket. The radiator fits up in the cage quite nicely, since the case was designed to allow liquid cooling)

No problems with the fan connection. The newer H60 AIO connects using a SATA connector and the pump tach connector goes to the cpu fan header, which leaves the top fan header for the rad fan. Never had a bios error so it must be fixed.
Unrelated: I did, however, get a no boot condition when trying to use a lite-on ssd in one of the sata caddy slots. Funny, since it came out of an old Precision laptop. All other ssd's and hard drives have given no problems.

"I always thought it was pump tach to PUMP FAN header and CPU FAN was *empty*"
I've actually run it both ways and it didn't make a difference on this particular PC. The bios and awcc are still fairly limited for the 3900 (non-x). That's why I use Ryzen Master to apply my OC/Undervolt every time I boot/reboot, for now.
Semi-unrelated: There are no OC options in the bios yet for my cpu and the oc options in awcc do nothing. Dell did release a new bios on July 3rd that is supposed to enable some of these features but even after reinstalling awcc and oc controls the advanced tabs don't show nor to the detailed oc fields show in the bios yet. I'm guessing awcc needs a software update as well, yet to come.

From what I understand, just replacing the top case fan with the ML-120 Pro ( no LED ) makes a huge difference in the noise. My R10 that I just got has a fan that makes this horrible moaning noise. I've also noticed the CPU fan never changes its speed, just the top case fan. I have to wonder if they're running the CPU cooler fan in that small space at a constant speed and using the top case fan to pull in cool air, because even under a Prime and Furbench load, i never see the cpu fan increase at all only the top CPU fan. It's bizzare. I'm really kind of wondering if this R10 is worth it if I have to buy a new fan and a CPU watercooling kit in order to make it function the way it was sold to me on the website. I bought it through Amazon because I was desperate for a PC at the time and couldn't wait until August. Actually, I'm still desperate for a PC ( The XPS 8300 I was using started suffering power supply and ethernet issues ), so I might have to just it up and keep this computer that I'm otherwise very happy with. But man, I will fill out every survey and review making sure everyone knows exactly what they're getting when they buy the R10 and nobody should EVER have air cooling on this system. Right now it's moaning and thermally throttling like crazy doing renders. And that new update on July 3rd did absolutely nothing in ACC for me - I can't control fans, GPU, CPU. Only the lights and audio ( which is surprisingly good to my ears ). But it's still crazy fast! And I love the Dell Mobile Connect software. Well.. First world problems, right? Anyone know if the Corsair h75 or h80 will fit in the R10? Would they offer any substantial benefit over the H60?

So I think I'd like to try putting in the liquid-cooled CPU but -- I'm a complete and total novice. Is it something I can do on my own if I've never put a part in a computer? I'm handy and not dumb, but wondering if there are good tutorial vids etc out there that would walk me through it without destroying the computer!!

What is your room temperature? That will also have an effect, but many people don't mention that in their posts.
Also, be sure you have good air flow to the computer. Inside a piece of furniture will also had things up.
Both seem obvious, but sometimes people miss things.
