Run two M.2 SSD drives side-by-side in a Latitude 7490 (one is NVMe)

Dear Dell Community,

I have recently purchased an NVMe drive to increase the speed of my system.  I currently have a slower M.2 SSD of 256GB using SATA 3.0.  The NVMe drive is 1TB and is about 6 times faster than the current one.
Can I run both drives side-by-side having the NVMe drive as a master and the SATA 3.0 drive as a slave?
So as to install my operating system on the NVMe drive and have 256GB's as extra internal storage space?

Kind regards,
David.

The days of master and slave are long gone when IDE was replaced by SATA. The 7490 does not have 2 x M.2 2280 slots so you can install an NVMe/PCIe SSD in place of the SATA SSD but will not be able to install the M.2 2280  SATA SSD as there is no slot for it. This post may help.

@JOcean, thank you for taking the time to respond.  I could not remember if the board supported 1 or 2 M.2 drives but your reply has cleared that up.  Here is a picture of the 7490 board showing only one M.2 drive which is NVMe compatible.

Best Wishes, @spearthistle

GUYS!!!!

If you look at the EMPTY WWAN slot, do what I did on my Dell 5490 and buy a M.2 2242 NGFF (and not a NVMe) and you can probably put a 2nd SSD into your Dell 7490... I am on Amazon right now, reordering the M.2 2242 500 GB  for $67.99 for my Dell 7490 to see if it will work , see this card (that is working as a 2nd SSD in a Dell 5490):  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087CL2V8Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used the NGFF for the second SSD , and left the NVMe drive as the bootable one. Hopefully your BIOS will support this set up.  I didn't have to change any BIOS settings for my adventures with the Dell 5490 and 5590.

I originally got this idea from the a Computer guy in Kansas - with a way to add a second hard disk/SDD to a Dell 5590, check out his blog article here ( also I had a Dell 5590 and used his technique here to replace the HDD with a M.2 2280 and then added a second HDD with mSata drive, not applicable to the 7490, but check out the techniques here:   https://www.thewichitacomputerguy.com/blog/how-add-second-hard-drive-dell-latitude-5580-or-5590?page=1

Well the M.2 2242 Dogfish / KingShark NGFF/Sata SSD did not work in my Dell 7490.  The bios shows the 1TB NVMe Samsung 970 EVO Plus I just cloned off the original 512 M.2 2280 SATA that came with the machine I bought off eBay and works fine as he bootable drive, and he BIOS says or lists SATA  and NVMe with the SATA previously populated and now the NVMe is populated.

So maybe the BIOS doesn't see a NGFF/SATA M.2 2242 in the WWAN Slot. This blog reference below has a guy with an older Dell 7270 using a M.2 2242 Western Digital WN520 series SSD that is M.2 NVMe , and says that works:

See this blog entry that seems to think you will need to put a M.2 NVMe in the WWAN slot of the Dell 7270, WILl need to scroll DOWN:

https://www.dell.com/community/Latitude/Add-2nd-SSD-to-Latitude-E7270/td-p/7813371

Relevant paragraph states:

"02-20-2021 03:03 AM
Add 2nd SSD to Latitude E7270

I have a Latitude E7270 and can confirm that the WWAN/HCA slot CAN accept a 2nd SSD that is 2242 size (22mmx42mm) and the Western Digital SN520 series drives work.

Disclaimer:  Basically, the 2242 PCIe NVMe M.2 2242 drive needs to have a physical B-slot and M-Slot such as the Western Digital SN520 series.  The typical PCIe NVMe M.2 2242 format cards only have an M-slot (such as the Samsung PM991 MZ-ALQ1280) which will NOT fit as the 2nd SSD port is physically set up for B-slot cards.  Only a few manufactures make a PCI-e NVMe M.2 2242 SSD with both the B-slot and M-slot, and the Western Digital SN520 series is one of those.  NOTE:  A SATA based M.2 2242 SSD will NOT work...the M.2 2242 drive must be PCIe NVMe.

So if you are looking to add a 2nd drive to your E7270, it is possible, and the Western Digital SN520 series  2242 works.  I tested it with both a Western Digital 128GB and 256GB SN520 Series NVMe 2242 sized SSD, model numbers SDAPMUW-128G and SDAPMUW-256G.  The E7270 recognizes the drive with no modifications to any BIOS settings.

Hope this helps.  "

So I might return the KingShark M.2 2242 SATA /NGFF drive and procure a M.2 NVMe 2242 ... or find another older laptop that will accept a M.2 2242  NGFF/SATA SSD in a secondary slot..

There's at least 1 x existing thread about 2nd SSD in the Latitude 7490. It's not possible. The WWAN slot does not support neither SATA not NVME 2242 M.2 disks.

Thanks RV_ABZ. I just opened up my Dell 7490 and tried to add a M.2 2242 NGFF Dogfish 51GB card in the WWAN slot and then a WD SN520 M.2 2242 128 GB card and both were not recognized by the Dell 7490.  I should have found the 7490 thread, would have saved me some time - but at least I know from experience it will not work, trying to use the WWAN slot to house a second SSD

You can go up to a 4 GB M.2 2280 drive, if you need that much space.

You may use up to 32 GB DDR-4 RAM (two x 16 GB sticks).

Crucial site shows compatible drives and RAM for your laptop.

Follow the disassembly and reassembly steps in Dell's Owner's Manual.
Look on YouTube for videos showing disassembly of your model. But, be cautious with them, as some use steps or methods that are not appropriate. Use the videos to add to your understanding of what to do, but follow the steps in Dell's manual.

Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. It's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard.
